Is Snoring a Sign of Danger to Health?

Almost all humans have experienced snoring in their sleep. Is snoring just a bad habit or a bad sign for your health?

First, we need to know what causes snoring to occur. Snoring is a sound made when air flows through the respiratory tract and through soft tissue. When it passes through soft tissue with high pressure, vibrations appear in the soft tissue. The sound produced by these vibrations is called snoring. If the throat opening is smaller, the pressure generated will be stronger, resulting in a louder snoring sound.

Can snoring be a sign that there is a problem in someone's body? The answer can be yes or no. When people are tired, they usually sleep snoring, but if someone is always snoring throughout their sleep, then we need to be aware of this. This indicates that there is a problem with the person's respiratory tract; there is a narrow part along the respiratory tract so that when air goes in and out, it causes the person to snore. This is a bad sign. Of course, this will also disrupt a person's sleep cycle.

Are there any tests we can do at home to distinguish between normal and abnormal snoring?

There is a questionnaire that we can do at home to determine whether the snoring experienced by our family or those closest to us is normal or severe. One of the questionnaires that we can use is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. If, after filling out the questionnaire, the number of points obtained is above 9, then this indicates that we are experiencing a sleep disorder that requires professional help. For children, we can also use a questionnaire, namely the pediatric sleep scale.

Treatment of Patients with Snoring

Usually, an ENT specialist will first analyze the cause of the snoring. There are several points that can be used as an assessment, such as body weight, age factors, measuring neck circumference, and gender. After that, there will be a further examination. We will take the patient to a special room, and the patient will be given a light anesthesia that causes the patient to sleep. When the patient makes snoring sounds, the doctor will look into the patient's throat with an endoscope to check which part is causing the snoring sound. it appears.

Another examination is a sleep study. The patient will stay overnight in the hospital, and during sleep periods, the patient will have a device attached to his body so that it can be seen whether there are periods of not breathing during sleep.

For patients who are overweight, doctors will usually recommend losing weight.
When a patient experiences a phase of not breathing in their sleep cycle, the doctor will recommend that the patient use a device, namely CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), which is a device used during sleep that is in the form of a hood and will provide air pressure through a mask while sleeping.

If breathing problems are caused by anatomical disorders, surgery will be performed to open the respiratory tract.

Hermina friends, watch the Hermina Podcast episode "Is Snoring Dangerous in Sleep?" which discusses the dangers of snoring and the importance of quality sleep (click here).

Is it safe for your little one to fast?

Fasting is a religious obligation for healthy adults. But what about children? Even though fasting is not yet mandatory, some parents may want to teach their children to fast from an early age so they get used to it later in life. From a religious perspective, a person is obliged to fast when they reach puberty, around the age of 9 to 14 years for boys and 8 to 13 years for girls. From a health perspective, at what age can children be taught to fast?

From a health perspective, children can fast according to religious recommendations, namely when they reach puberty, around the age of 9 to 14 years for boys and 8 to 13 years for girls. Metabolically, children are ready to fast at that age. At around 8–9 years old, parents can start teaching their children to fast. At an age before that

Just like for adults, the benefits of fasting for children include:

Teaching children to be disciplined
Train patience and self-control in children.
Improves immune system function
Suppresses inflammation and oxidative stress associated with cancer.
Inhibits premature aging

So that children can fast smoothly, there are several things that parents need to pay attention to when their children are fasting, including:

The child must be in good health.
While the child is fasting, the child must also receive fluids or nutrition according to their needs.
Before teaching your little one to fast, parents can first consult a pediatrician to find out whether their child can fast and how to fulfill the nutritional and fluid needs that must be met during fasting.

Children's conditions for which fasting is not recommended

Children who are sick
Children who are chronically ill are undergoing routine medication because there are concerns that it will interfere with the administration of the medication.
Children with eating disorders or children who are malnourished.

Healthy fasting tips for children

Check your child's health condition by first consulting a pediatrician.
Can be started at the age of 8–9 years.
Children's diet when fasting: when fasting, the child can be given foods with a low glycemic index, such as dates, and carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, such as brown rice. Avoid saturated fats and avoid using UPF (ultra-processed food). Protein can be obtained from fish, eggs, or meat. Likewise, at dawn, choose foods that will prevent excessive hunger as much as possible.
Apart from that, children's sleeping hours also need to be paid attention to because children have to wake up at dawn, so as much as possible, children can sleep as early as possible. So that the child's sleep time is fulfilled for 8 hours.
Reduce children's physical activity.

Hermina friends, listen to Dr. Puspita, Sp.A., about fasting in children in full on OBSERVASI HERMINA on the Hermina Hospitals YouTube channel (click here).

What causes wisdom teeth to grow crookedly?

Wisdom teeth that grow later often cause complaints when they grow, even growing crookedly, or impaction. Impacted teeth are the condition of teeth that cannot erupt or grow in their position because they are blocked by something such as tissue or neighboring teeth, causing medical problems and discomfort ranging from mild to severe discomfort that requires further action. Apart from that, impacted teeth can also occur due to the narrow size of the jaw.

Factors Causing Tooth Impaction

The size of the jaw arch is narrow, so the teeth cannot erupt properly.
Children in the teething period whose milk teeth do not fall out until the space that should be in the milk teeth is replaced by permanent teeth and is blocked by milk teeth, thereby reducing the space for permanent teeth to grow.
In the mixed dentition period, namely at the age when children change teeth, the primary teeth are damaged so that the teeth fall out too quickly and the permanent teeth do not have a guide to erupt, so they can grow deviantly, to the left or right, not in the position they should be.
The tooth bud jar and the position of the tooth when it comes out are quite far away.
Pathological tissue growth around tooth growth that can prevent tooth growth

What are the characteristics of tooth impaction?

Pain occurs, but the source of the pain is often not found. This is usually caused by the blocked tooth growth process.
Swelling that occurs in the gum area
Opening the mouth is limited because there is an infection.

If Friends of Hermina experience the above complaints, immediately consult the nearest dentist or dentist who specializes in oral surgery and carry out clinical and radiographic examinations to get appropriate treatment.

Friends of Hermina, if you experience complaints, immediately have your teeth checked at the nearest general dentist or the oral surgery clinic at Hermina CIputat Hospital to get the right treatment as early as possible.

Listen to drg. Wisdom teeth grow crookedly, do you need surgery?

Does an impacted tooth require surgery?

Impacted teeth must receive special treatment from an oral surgeon. One of the treatments or management of impacted teeth is an odontectomy procedure, or what people often call wisdom tooth surgery. Odontectomy can be carried out using two methods, namely local anesthesia, which can be done in an outpatient clinic, but for patients with dental conditions who have a high level of difficulty carrying out the operation, it can be done using the general anesthesia method, which must be done in a hospital, in the operating room, or in inpatient care. This depends on the position of the teeth, the level of inclination, and the level of difficulty in the process.

Treatment of impacted teeth can be done in two ways:

Preventive action: namely, preventive action, namely, the removal or removal of wisdom teeth, which is carried out before the patient experiences complaints. After a clinical and radiographic examination by a doctor, it has been confirmed that the patient's teeth are growing imperfectly or crookedly, so they can be extracted before the patient experiences complaints as a preventive measure.
Curative Action: Action taken because the patient has complained of pain accompanied by swelling and even infection.

What happens if you delay the removal of impacted wisdom teeth?
If it is confirmed that the tooth is in a bad position and there are indications for extraction, it must be extracted immediately. Delaying action or examination will only delay and prolong the pain. In some cases, impacted teeth cannot grow because they do not have a place to grow, pushing against neighboring teeth, which can result in damage to other teeth. Apart from that, delaying the removal of impacted wisdom teeth can also cause infections ranging from abscesses to swelling, facial asymmetry, and, worse, oral cysts. Before impacted teeth cause complex problems, management should be carried out as early as possible.

Complications that occur when wisdom teeth are removed

Odontectomy is a safe surgical procedure that meets operational standards for procedures carried out by dentists who specialize in oral surgery. However, there are several things that often happen after an odontectomy, including:

Swelling is normal, but this is due to inflammation after surgery. Swelling usually lasts 4-5 days and will shrink on its own as healing occurs.
Mild nerve injury to the lower jaw, but this is very rare. This occurs when the position of the teeth is close to vital structures. But of course, the doctor will carry out the action very carefully and very safely so that these complications do not occur.

Prevention of Impacted Teeth

Have regular check-ups with the dentist at least once every 6 months.
For children aged 5–6 years and over who are in the process of changing their teeth, if a milk tooth is loose and must be removed, it must be removed immediately so that it does not cause persistence.
Maintain healthy teeth and mouths so that no teeth are lost prematurely and teeth can grow according to the guide.
If you feel a complaint, immediately have your teeth checked at least by the nearest general dentist to get the right treatment as early as possible.

Listen to drg. Muhammad Syakuran, Sp.BM, FICS about tooth impaction on OBSERVASI HERMINA on the Hermina Hospitals Youtube Channel (click here).

When is it time for tonsillitis surgery?

Tonsils are lymphoid tissue whose job it is to maintain the body's defenses or immunity. Tonsils are not only found in the oral cavity; they are also found in other areas, such as those behind the nose, or adenoids, and under the tongue, which are called lingual tonsils. The three tonsils are all lymphoid tissue, which is often also called Waldeyer's ring, which is an organ whose job it is to maintain the body's defenses or body immunity in the upper respiratory tract.

Causes of Tonsillitis
There are many factors that can cause inflammation of the tonsils, including:

Bacterial or viral infections that attack the immune system
Allergies or atopy, especially in children whose parents have a history of allergies or atopy
Often, people consume sweet foods such as chocolate, fizzy drinks, or ready-to-drink drinks with high sugar content, which can trigger reactions such as allergies, namely inflammation. Apart from that, plaque from food will stick to the throat cavity or teeth.

Symptoms of Tonsillitis

We can divide the inflammation of the tonsils into two phases, namely acute and chronic. The acute phase is the phase when you are sick. Complaints include pain when swallowing and coughing. Some people also experience cold symptoms, coughing with a thick slurp, and fever. In the chronic phase, or if you have had tonsillitis for a long time, the symptoms are frequent snoring, sleep apnea, or stopping breathing during sleep. This sleep apnea will, of course, cause the child's sleep to be of poor quality and can cause the child to have frequent tantrums and become weak and sleepy quickly. In the long term, this will, of course, cause the child to become an individual who is easily angry and has difficulty concentrating. Apart from that, chronic tonsillitis will also cause recurring coughs and colds.

Does Tonsillitis Require Surgery?
There are several criteria for patients to undergo tonsillectomy. Absolute criteria include frequent shortness of breath during sleep, sleep apnea, and severe snoring. There are also relative criteria, namely recurring coughs and colds with a frequency of more than five times a year. However, before proceeding to surgery, of course, treatment will be carried out with medication during the acute phase. Of course, surgery is carried out electively if the patient has passed the acute phase.

Hermina friends, see the complete explanation about tonsillitis on the Hermina Hospitals Youtube channel (click here).

What is first aid when experiencing a sports injury?

Currently, people have started to pay attention to their health and have started doing more sports activities. By definition, sport is a structured and planned activity that aims to improve fitness and health in a person's body. Exercise has many benefits, starting with the respiratory system, heart, and blood vessel systems. Not less important, exercise is also beneficial for the musculoskeletal system (muscles, connective tissue, nerves, and bones and joints). However, the risk of injury can also occur when we exercise, which can harm our body.

What should we do to avoid injury while exercising?

Warm up before doing exercise.
Choose a sport that you like so that you can do it consistently and continuously.
Check your condition before exercising, such as your breathing ability, heart ability, musculoskeletal condition, or whether there are metabolic diseases that require supervision while exercising.
Check body posture. There are several body postures that can increase the risk of injury, such as someone who has general hyperflexion or ligaments that are too flexible. Or other postures such as scoliosis, or lack of balance between the right and left feet, flat feet is also a posture condition that has a high risk of injury when exercising.
When starting exercise, don't start with heavy portions right away; pay attention to the duration, frequency, and intensity. Start at a low level first. And try to take a break for one day for our bodies to recover.

What is first aid for sports injuries?

When an injury occurs while exercising, first make sure the injury is on hard parts, such as bones and joints, or soft parts. The principle is that if an injury occurs, don't massage and apply the RICE concept (rest, ice, compression, and elevation).

Rest: Immediately stop physical activity when an injury occurs. This aims to rest the body to stop injuries and speed up the recovery period after an injury.
Ice (ice compress): compress ice on the injured area of the body. This is intended to reduce pain and swelling. Cold temperatures make the injured area less painful. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin surface. Apply ice with a towel or cloth. Then compress the wound area for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, and do this 2 to 3 times a day.
Compression: This is done by wearing a bandage or elastic bandage. This is to prevent swelling in the wound area. Avoid wrapping too tightly.
Elevation (Lifting the Injured Part Higher): Elevating the injured body part is done to minimize swelling. For example, if the part of the body that is injured is a leg, then the elevation technique can be done by placing the leg straight and supporting it with a pillow so that the leg remains in a higher position when sitting or sleeping.

Hermina friends, see the explanation about first aid for sports injuries and how to prevent them in full on the Hermina Hospitals YouTube channel! This is the Importance of Pneumonia Vaccination for Adults

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue that can be caused by bacteria or viruses. There are three main symptoms of pneumonia, including shortness of breath, fever, and cough. In severe conditions, people who have pneumonia can experience severe symptoms up to respiratory failure. One effort to prevent pneumonia is to vaccinate. How important is pneumonia vaccination in preventing pneumonia?

Pneumonia vaccines can help prevent pneumonia infections. Vaccines help protect against various types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. Vaccines work effectively by helping the body produce its own antibodies, which protect it from exposure to bacteria that cause pneumonia.

There are several populations at risk of experiencing severe symptoms if infected with pneumonia, including:

Sufferers of chronic diseases such as heart problems, kidney problems, diabetes mellitus patients, kidney problems in patients who have undergone hemodialysis, and patients with asthma. Patients who suffer from chronic diseases usually have a lower immune system, so if they are infected with pneumonia, they will experience severe symptoms up to respiratory failure.
The second group is patients who have immune systems, such as HIV/AIDS sufferers or people who take drugs that suppress the immune system, namely autoimmune patients.
People who want to travel to areas where someone could potentially be infected with pneumonia, for example, the Hajj and Umrah
Next, the elderly, namely those aged over 65 years, are a population at risk of experiencing severe symptoms if infected with pneumonia.

This population should be given a pneumonia vaccination so that they can avoid serious symptoms due to pneumonia and even respiratory failure. In general, guidelines for pneumonia vaccination can be recommended from 19 years of age. However, for the four populations above, the priority is to be able to vaccinate against pneumonia.

There are two types of pneumonia vaccines on the market today, including:

PCV 13 (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine). This vaccine can be given to people aged 19 and older.
PPSV23 (Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine). This vaccine can be given to people over 50 years of age.

AEFI (Post-Immunization Event) Pneumonia Vaccination
The same as vaccination in general, pneumonia vaccination can also cause AEFI (post-immunization events) such as pain at the injection site, redness or swelling at the injection site, and then mild fever, muscle aches, and joint pain. However, there is no need to worry about this because it will disappear by itself on the 2nd or 3rd day after immunization.

Hermina friends, see the explanation about the importance of pneumonia vaccination on the Hermina Hospitals YouTube channel! Is Frequent Vaginal Discharge Dangerous?

Vaginal discharge is something that all women have experienced. Nearly 90% of women in Indonesia experience vaginal discharge problems because Indonesia is an area with humid temperatures. By definition, vaginal discharge, or, in medical terms, fluoroalbus, leucorrhea, or white discharge, is a condition where fluid or mucus comes from the female genitals or vagina and is not blood. The fluid, or mucus, produced by the vagina and cervix transports dead cells and bacteria out of the vagina, thereby keeping it clean. If you bleed, it is called menstruation, and if the fluid or mucus is not blood, it is called vaginal discharge.

Not all vaginal discharge experienced by women is pathological or diseased, but there is also vaginal discharge that is physiological or normal and usually occurs during menstruation, after menstruation, during the fertile period, and after using IUD contraception. Meanwhile, pathological vaginal discharge is usually caused by inflammation, tumours, polyps, and most often, cervical cancer.

Vaginal discharge is usually complained of when it produces symptoms. Symptoms will usually appear because of the excessive amount or production of vaginal discharge. Abnormal vaginal discharge is usually caused by an infection, which usually comes from a fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infection. which is triggered by a poor immune system.

Prevention of Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge can be prevented by doing several things, such as:

Maintain body endurance.
Maintain the cleanliness of the vaginal organs.
Avoid using pantyliners continuously.
Clean the genital organs with running water.
Avoid wearing tight trousers.

Characteristics of abnormal vaginal discharge:

Under normal conditions, the mucus and body fluids that come out have certain properties. For example, the colour can be clear or white or odourless, and the texture changes depending on your menstrual cycle. However, if the mucus and body fluids released cause symptoms such as itching, a foul or fishy smell, and vaginal discharge that changes colour, then the vaginal discharge is abnormal vaginal discharge and requires treatment.

Hermina friends, listen to Dr. Fahmialdi, Sp.OG, in full on the Hermina Podcast about vaginal discharge on the Hermina Hospitals YouTube channel (click here).

To the point of wanting to hurt her baby, what happens to mothers with baby blues?

The process of pregnancy and childbirth is a very emotional one; for some and most people, it is a happy moment. Mothers who are pregnant, of course, feel very happy and look forward to the arrival of their baby. However, for some people, it turns out to be a difficult experience. They feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to adapt to a new environment, resulting in several emotional disorders ranging from mild to severe. One of the emotional disorders that mothers often experience after giving birth is Baby Blues Syndrome, or, in medical terms, Postpartum Syndrome. Baby Blues Syndrome is the mildest emotional mental disorder for mothers after giving birth.

Symptoms of Baby Blues Syndrome
In the early days after giving birth, the mother will usually feel happy with the presence of her baby, but a few moments later, the mother will feel overwhelmed and burdened, feeling that she is not good enough to be a mother. Apart from that, mothers will usually feel irritable, get tired quickly, and experience sleep disturbances. Some even experience a decrease in appetite.

Baby blues syndrome usually occurs 3–4 days after delivery; usually, on the 10th day, there will be improvement. After two weeks, the symptoms usually disappear. If these symptoms have not disappeared for more than two weeks, then you need to be careful because it is possible that postpartum depression could arise, which is an emotional disorder that is more severe than baby blues syndrome and requires more intensive attention. In conditions like this, mothers should immediately consult professional staff, whether general practitioners, psychiatrists, or psychologists.

Baby blues syndrome is caused by several risk factors, including hormonal disorders, a lack of rest, and a previous history of emotional mental disorders such as depression. Baby Blues is one of the predictive factors for postpartum depression, which is a psychiatric emergency or an emergency condition in psychiatry. Prevention can be done by providing education to expectant mothers. In other words, the support of those closest to you, such as your partner and family, is also important for mothers who experience baby blues so that they don't fall into postpartum depression. Apart from that, don't feel afraid or embarrassed to consult a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Hermina friends, listen to Dr. Nina Masdiani, Sp.KJ, read more about baby blues syndrome on the Hermina Hospitals Youtube channel (click here).

Experience 5L? Anaemia alert!

Anemia is, by definition, a condition where our hemoglobin levels are lower than the normal limit. It is said to be anemia if a person's hemoglobin level is less than 12 g/dL for women and less than 13 g/dL for men. Hemoglobin is a component in red blood cells whose job it is to bind oxygen to be carried throughout the body for the metabolism of all cells.

Anemia is often associated with 5L (weakness, tiredness, lethargy, tiredness, and inattention). 5L is the main symptom of anemia sufferers that we can encounter at the beginning if we experience anemia. Such things as getting tired easily, having no energy, tending to get sleepy easily, and having difficulty concentrating—even teenage students who find it difficult to understand lessons at school and whose school performance is not good—could be signs of anemia. Because hemoglobin's function is to deliver oxygen to all body cells, including the brain, If little oxygen is brought to the brain, of course, it will make it difficult for us to concentrate and become sleepy easily. Apart from that, in general, the body's cells will also lack oxygen and energy, which makes people suffering from anemia easily tired and lethargic.

Causes of anemia

Broadly speaking, anemia is caused by two things, namely:

Insufficient hemoglobin formation is caused by:

Lack of iron, which is the basic ingredient that forms hemoglobin
Lack of other substances that also form hemoglobin, namely folic acid and B12
There are certain disorders due to certain diseases, such as thalassemia.

Excessive production or excessive breakdown of red blood cells is caused by:

Heavy bleeding like a woman whose menstruation is long and heavy due to a special problem in her uterus
A blood disorder occurs where the red blood cells break down excessively and prematurely, or what we call hemolytic anemia.

Who is at risk of developing anemia?

Anemia is caused by many things, but there are certain groups who are at risk of developing anemia. Anemia is most often experienced by teenagers, breastfed babies, and the elderly who eat or have insufficient intake. Apart from that, pregnant women whose intake is insufficient are also at risk of developing anemia. Vegetarian people who consume less meat are also at risk of developing anemia because meat is also a source of iron

Anemia Treatment

Anemia is cured in different ways. Each cure for anemia is tailored to the cause. Not all anemia is cured with blood-boosting tablets. For example, if anemia is caused by iron deficiency, then, of course, treat it by eating foods that contain lots of iron. Or if anemia is caused by a certain autoimmune disease that causes excessive breakdown of red blood cells, then of course the autoimmune disease is treated. And if the anemia you experience is severe and the hemoglobin level reaches 8 g/dL, then the treatment is a blood transfusion. Doctors play an important role in determining the cause of anemia and providing appropriate therapy.

Anemia Complications

In the long term, anemia can cause heart problems. If hemoglobin levels are low, the heart will work harder to pump blood throughout the body so that there is sufficient oxygen in the body's cells. As a result, there was interference with the heart muscles; the heart became big and thick, so he experienced complaints such as shortness of breath and walking that was a little breathless due to complications occurring with the heart.

If you experience symptoms of 5L, then immediately consult a doctor to get treatment. Do not come to consult a doctor when you experience serious complaints such as a faster heartbeat or tachycardia. If treatment is delayed, then the treatment will be more complex.

Friends of Hermina, see the complete explanation about anemia in the Hermina Podcast episode with Dr. Siti Hapsari Mitayani, Sp.PD (click here).

How Important is Sleep for Health?

We often take sleep for granted, even though sleep is a very important period in our daily lives, namely a period for rest. Sleep is a condition where our body experiences a decrease in physical activity, a decrease in mental activity, and a decrease in sensory activity which is reversible or can be awakened again.

How important is sleep for our body?

Sleep is very important for our body, when we sleep we think our body is not doing anything, in fact our body is in an active state. During sleep, energy storage processes occur, body repair and recovery processes occur, and brain maintenance processes even occur while we sleep. During sleep, all the events we experience, what we see and hear and learn that day will be organized by the brain to become memories in our brain. Apart from that, when we sleep, the body will also get rid of toxins and also refresh the body so it is ready to return to activity.

Types of human sleep phases

Sleep is divided into two phases, namely the rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM) phases. When we sleep we will close our eyes and relax the body and enter the Non-REM phase which is the shallow part of sleep. In this phase the muscles begin to relax, breathing begins to slow down, blood pressure decreases and begins to relax. Next we will enter the deep sleep phase where blood pressure will decrease, breathing will become more regular, muscles will become weaker and the body will become more relaxed.

The next phase is the rapid eye movement (REM) phase. In this phase, we have entered deep sleep, but it turns out that our brain activity increases in this phase. In this phase the brain starts working, removing toxins, inserting memories into the brain. Or in other words, in this phase our brain is doing "housekeeping". In this phase, the heart rate usually increases, breathing starts to become irregular and blood pressure starts to rise. Apart from that, if you pay attention, our eyes are actively moving even though we are in deep sleep. In this phase dreams also appear.

When we sleep, we will experience this phase repeatedly, from Non-REM to REM back again for up to 6 cycles. If during sleep we successfully go through these 6 cycles, we will sleep quality and wake up refreshed. Poor quality sleep will affect our health and mood. We will not be able to carry out activities well, such as having difficulty concentrating, being sleepy all day and having no enthusiasm for carrying out activities.

Hermina friends, watch the Hermina Podcast episode “Is Snoring Dangerous in Sleep?” which discusses the dangers of snoring and the importance of quality sleep (click here).

What Causes an Enlarged Prostate in Men? Should You Have an operation?

Friends of Hermina: prostate disease is a disease that men need to watch out for. The prostate is a gland that functions as a producer of sperm fluid and is located between the penis and bladder. Prostate disease is a disease caused by abnormalities of the prostate. Usually associated with urination. Usually the symptoms that appear are difficulty urinating, bloody urine, urinary congestion, and even not being able to urinate at all. There are several kinds of diseases of the prostate, such as prostate enlargement, infection of the prostate, and prostate cancer.

Causes and risk factors for prostate disease

Age: Prostate enlargement usually occurs in men aged over 50 years.
A diet high in fat and high in cholesterol
Have a family history of prostate disease
Race: Black people are more at risk of developing prostate cancer.
Unhealthy lifestyles, such as consuming alcoholic beverages and smoking.

Symptoms of Benign Prostate Enlargement and Prostate Cancer
Symptoms experienced by people who have benign prostate enlargement are almost similar to those experienced by people with prostate cancer, such as straining urine, a weak urinary stream, dripping urine, difficulty holding urine, or even worse, blocked urine or being unable to urinate at all. However, for patients who have prostate cancer, there are additional symptoms such as repeated red urine; for those who are already severe, it can cause symptoms of bone pain such as cervical spine pain and others.

Diagnosis of Prostate Disease
To diagnose, usually the doctor will carry out an assessment, such as the age and complaints felt by the patient, and whether there are other diseases he has. After an assessment by the doctor, the doctor will carry out other supporting examinations such as laboratory tests, PSA, and ultrasound.

Management of prostate disease
If you have been diagnosed with mild prostate disease, such as mild prostate enlargement or prostate infection, then medication is sufficient. However, if the complaint is severe, such as bloody urine, very painful urination, or the inability to urinate at all, and is not relieved by medication, surgery will be required.

Prostate Disease Prevention
Although prostate disease is difficult to prevent because it is a disease that occurs naturally, a healthy lifestyle can minimize the risk of disorders and symptoms that occur due to this disease. Friends of Hermina can adopt a healthy lifestyle, such as:

Consume a healthy and balanced diet.
Reducing the consumption of alcoholic beverages
Do not smoke.
Exercise regularly
Maintain the cleanliness of intimate organs.

Carry out routine checks, especially for men who are elderly and have symptoms.

Friends of Hermina, See a complete explanation of prostate disease in the episode of Hermina Podcast with Dr. Max Stefanus Ranti, Sp.U.
